[first draft?].
N.Y. Feb 26th 1868
Dr. Fr. & Mr.,
Not having been able to
save up enough money to send you any for some
time past], and not feeling like writing unless
I could send you some when I write, is the
reason I have not written for some time SO long. [I llegible]
I have not written but once more sending you
the [but?] my 2 lbs, But I have been all the
time in hopes to hear from you [while? waiting?]
to be able to to save up some more [m]oney. One
reason of my not being able to send any this Winter
is that I had to spend more to go through the
lawful, cold weather here comfortably And there
has been a chance of there being some trouble here
about [politics?], which affects most everybody in
some way or other. I assume you have heard about
it all before now, but I believe it is now
pretty near over, or past the danger for the
present. I send you £2. enclosed, which is
all I can spare at this time, but am very
much in hopes to be able to send you more this
spring. I will have no trouble now in always having
a good place, as I know now just how
to do, and am glad to say without any
assistance from relatives, who I don't trouble
myself much about now. You may rest easy
that I am well and doing well, with a good
