Mr Dear Sir
From the heading of the enclosed Testemon-
ials, you will perceive that I have been obliged to give up my
native Town, and come on the recommendation of the Most Revd
Dr McNally to /work at the see of the Diocese, a very poor place
oblige me to this
, from the number of Medical
Men residing in Carrickmacross, and the poverty of the Country.
I regret to say that the prospect is not much better here,
the people are in an awful state of destitution, Turnip and
Cabbage are luxuries to them, every man from the highest to
the lowest is affect/ed more or less by the failure of the
potatoe crop His Lordship (Dr McNally) is very kind to my Sis-
ter and I, since we came; he this day invited us to spend our
Christmas with him, but beyond these attentions, I have nothing
to expect from him, to enable me to live, I therefore send
you my testamonials and request to hear from you, If you
would encourage a Man to go /to/ America, and to what part, and
what Medical & Surgical qualifications are requisit to entitle
a Man to Practice, in America,
When we last had the pleasure of hearing from you, you
were all intent on the electric Telegraph
/Well wishes and salutations
PS We are not far from the Port of Belfast and would be glad
to see you, should you visit your dear native Island.
[Both O'Reillys were from Carrickmacross, Co. Cavan.
