Robert notes that the California newspaper that James sent him was full of "stabbings & shootings," and concludes that "Society must be in an awful state. Notes that James has given up mining for blacksmithing. Reports that neither Hugh nor Sally is married. John reports that he's "still working away in the old shop, if not making much, I am comfortably off" with his wife, Sarah, and 3 children; but hopes that better prospects are ahead. News of cousins, etc.
