Caroline Williamson, Ahory, County Armagh, to her son, William Williamson, California, 12 August 1856
Description
Poorly photocopied ms., not transcribed; no notes except those below. She thanks William for his letter and for the gold ring he sent by Carolina Peebles, who returned from America for a visit. She complains of fading eyesight. Notes that all emigrants write that "they are well and doing well," but she's glad to believe that this is really true in William's case. She deeply regrets her husband's and sons' earlier inability to loan William the money he requested, but times were very bad because of famine, sickness, and mass emigration, She tries to reassure William of her undying love, and fills the latter part of her letter with religious admonitions and advice about raising his children.
