hope to be able to leave o[ur]5 conce[rn].. & SO you all once again. I think it fortunate
that Brother & Sister Cordner did not Come out this spring past as every account from N.
York & Philadephia States that passengers are arriving there without number & the total
stagnation in business has rendered some almost destitute of the6 [basic neccessities o]f
life--Though in a Country like America an extensive back Country to settle up
those...some hundreds or even thousands of miles into & settle down to hard work
cannot fail...by their industry if they can only but in most new countries health is rather
precarious until once the Country gets cultivated which tends much to its health. As I
intend writing some more letters to my Brothers & Sisters I will close by sending my best
love to Broth Robt. Brother & Sister Waugh & family Brother & Sister Dickey Broth &
Sister Phenix Brother & Sister Cordner & believe me ever your affectionate son
Andrew Richey
Give my best respects to all my A[un]ts uncles & Cousins & as you see I have not room
to name them all you must consider them all as named personally
We all live together as usual & Siste[r E]liza ² & the children are all well & her Brother &
Mother live with us. I d[id]8 not go on to N York this spring past as we wish[ed] to get

Andrew Richey, Clinton, Mississippi, to his parents, Ireland, September 1837
Description
Andrew Richey writes to his parents expressing the sadness of missing his brother and with the heaviness of business falling on him alone. He relates that the panic of the recent widespread banking failure has passed but most banks are "suspended" with some failed. Many in the "Commerce & the Mercantile Community" have been "prostrated" by the failures, caused overall by "over speculation". James's own merchant business carries on, even though in the worst of times. He is glad "Brother & Sister Cordner "did not come out to America yet with reports of 'passengers arriving to New York and Philadelphia without number".
