1865-1901. This memoir began in the 1940s as MacGowan's oral history, as told in Irish to, and transcribed in Irish by Sean O hEochaidh, a collector for the Irish Folklore Commission and, eventually, MacGowan's son-in-law. It was edited extensively for Raidio Eireann and for publication in Irish by Proinnsias O Conluain, and published in 1959 as 'Rotha Mor an tSaoil'. MacGowan d. on 29 Nov. 1948. O hEochaidh's preface does not mention the location of his "original" manuscript transcription.
